Saturday 9th January- bike ***** - Felixstowe to Levington Marina – sunny, still and cold.

After a run of cloudy, cold days when we have been going for a 3 mile walk along Felixstowe prom for our daily exercise, we were keen to get out on the bikes today with wall-to-wall sunshine forecast. Woke to another very cold day but sunny and after a morning at home we packed a flask of soup, wrapped up well and left home at 12.30. We decided to head over towards Levington Marina trying to avoid the footpaths which have become very muddy with all the rain of late! We were warm enough on the bikes in the winter sunshine with a crystal-clear blue sky as we passed the cemetery, over the dock spur with the huge warehouses being built nearing completion. We decided to try a footpath coming out on Cordys Lane, we had hoped it was still frozen but the sun had melted it making it soft. Then heading towards our favourite tree lined route which we gave a miss today instead taking the farm track that runs along the railway line which was great to bike on but no deer today. Past the small frozen fishing lakes and down past Loompit Lake to the foreshore by the River Orwell. The tide was very low, with even a family in wellies out in the mud. We pushed our bikes along the beach looking for a spot to have our soup and found the ideal place at the end of the beach. It was a perfect spot to enjoy watching the waders in the mud, a stream of cormorants heading home and even a couple of grebes. There was a couple of bait diggers, fishing has now been given the green light in this latest lock down as has sailing/windsurfing but the weather needs to warm up before I am tempted to look for a suitable venue as you are limited to how far you can drive! After a relaxing stop to biked back along the top path back to Loompit Lake which was also frozen in places although two fly fishermen were there. There was a steady stream of walkers here and the path became very muddy but we made it to the marina OK. We were surprised to see lots of cars at the marina with people working on and visiting their boats. We biked all the way around to the windsurfing launch with the marina very still with fantastic reflections. Then back along the roads to the bike path which runs by the A 14 back to Trimley. All we had to do was bike the long Trimley High Street, stopping off at the Co-op for milk. Then home for a welcome cuppa and cake making the real fire up as a bit nippy!
